Overview
1,3-DMAA is a drug made synthetically in a laboratory. It was originally used as a nasal decongestant. Today, 1,3-DMAA is sold as a dietary supplement used for attention deficit-hyperactive disorder (ADHD), weight loss, improving athletic performance, and body building.
Some products claim that 1,3-DMAA naturally comes from rose geranium oil. Supplements that contain this ingredient sometimes list rose geranium, geranium oil, or geranium stems on the label. However, laboratory analysis shows that this drug probably does not come from this natural source. It is thought that these manufacturers have artificially added this drug to the supplement rather than obtaining it from a natural source. 1,3-DMAA is considered a drug in Canada and is not permitted in dietary supplements or natural health products.
Many athletes take 1,3-DMAA to improve performance. However, 1,3-DMAA was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited substances list in 2010. Therefore, competitive athletes should avoid taking it.
Dosage information
A typical starting dose of 1,3-DMAA is in the 10-20mg range and eventually reaching up to 40-60mg a day, there is no actual evidence to support
this dosage range but it seems to be the standard dosages range for supplemental 1,3-DMAA on the market.
1,3-DMAA is known to be banned by various sports organizations due to its amphetamine-like nature, and should not be used by tested athletes.
DMAA PHYSIOLOGICAL/PERFORMANCE EFFECTS
To determine the physiologic response to DMAA (25 mg), we measured resting heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature at multiple intervals over a 24-hours period [5]. Heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature were minimally impacted by DMAA ingestion. For example, during the initial 8-hours post ingestion period, the mean heart rate remained between 61 and 65 beats per minute, the mean systolic blood pressure remained between 115 and 120 mmHg, the mean diastolic blood pressure remained between 78 and 82 mmHg, and the mean body temperature remained between 96.5 and 97.5°F. In many cases, the respective values were lower during the post ingestion period as compared to pre-ingestion.
